MuttShack At Baton Rouge Pet Evacuation Transport Training

What to do with the family pets when you get the order to evacuate

July 5, 2008

MuttShack Animal Rescue reminds Louisiana pet owners pay special attention to hurricane warnings and to include family pets in hurricane planning.  Have a plan in place for your furry friends when the evacuation order is given for coastal Louisiana.

The Pets Evacuation and Transportation Standards (PETS) Act of 2006 mandates all state and local emergency plans address the needs of individuals with household pets and service animals.

Amanda St. John, of MuttShack Animal Rescue the pet transportation partner for the State of Louisiana  said, "We ’re working with GOHSEP, LSART and the parishes to practice our evacuation modules and  have plans in place to assure pets are evacuated along with their owners to keep people and their pets together.”

GOHSEP director, Mark Cooper said, “Moving Louisiana’s pet population in an orderly and efficient manner is a top priority if a major hurricane is on track to hit Louisiana.  We encourage everyone to include their family pet(s) in hurricane evacuation strategy, and we urge people to not leave pets behind.”

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF), the USDA and parish officials practiced their pet evacuation procedures at the Baton Rouge Animal Control facility.

Working with LSART and using 150 dogs and cats from the Baton Rouge Animal Control, they registered the pets, put identification tags on them, and placed them in cages which then were put on a conveyor belt that loaded them into the MuttShack 53' Transportation truck which is equipped with a cooling system.

State Animal Response Team (LSART). LSART provides assistance and leadership in animal-related disasters under the direction of the State Veterinarian’s Office.
