Volunteers in Korea Fight to Rescue Dogs to be Kept as Pets and not Food

MuttShacker, Young Lee is doing groundbreaking work in South Korea establishing the first MuttShack dog rescue safe houses in Jang Yu, South Korea.  The houses are staffed by volunteers who take care of the rescued dogs, socialize them and get them healthy and then promote them and find them new homes.

Young Lee, Project Coordinator, and her own rescued dogs Tatum, Jasmine and Sunday.

Jang Yu Safe House

Pictured here at our Jang Yu "Safe House for Street Angels" are four of five adorable rescued puppies.

These puppies were born in the City Animal Shelter and were rescued and brought to the safe house with their mommy. The fifth puppy was very weak and was undergoing medical care when this photo was taken.

The Jang Yu safe house presently has about 30 dogs that live cage free during the day.  Dogs that are rescued from the city shelter, and abuse situations, are vetted, spayed/neutered and vaccinated before being brought in.  Dogs are then promoted and adopted through our online Korean network and discussion group.

Reports are posted daily of the number of animals, their health conditions, their adoptive prospects and status as well as photos, and all expenses of the day.

As soon as a dog is adopted and there is room for more, volunteers pull/rescue more animals from the City Animal shelters.

It is a tough fight because we have to fight to rescue dogs and we have to be careful when we adopt that they are not taken for food" says Young.

All dogs at the safe house are adopted in Korea after thorough screening and home checks.  Young is adamant that dogs not be brought to America.  She has been working to find homes in Los Angeles for shelter dogs for many years.  "There are enough of dogs in Los Angeles to rescue here" she says.

It is not just dogs that are getting our attention but cats as well.  Young and her group at Jang Yu are working with the City Animal Shelter to implement a Trap Neuter Release program for cats.

Please Join Us!

MuttShack is receiving many requests from rescuers and groups, and we want to bring in more food, supplies and assistance.

The Safe House needs ongoing food, supplies and medical care.  Animals brought to the safe house are rescued animals from the streets, abuse situations and shelters.  Your help is needed to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity to effect change in South Korea.

If you would like to be a part of this rescue effort, please sign up to be a volunteer or become a supporting member.
