VOLUNTEER FOR KATRINA
ANIMAL RELIEF EFFORTS.
MuttShacks Urgently Needed
Many people in New Orleans are surrendering their
pets. Even those who evacuated with their pets are
finding it very hard. Some people have surrendered
their pets because they have no homes to come back to,
or find their homes no longer have fences to hold their
pets. Others simply lost everything or have
relatives who lost everything. They are giving up
their animals because there is no room. A city
that had 500,000 residents now only has 100,000. They do
not have the population to adopt the animals from the
shelters and many are being euthanized.
Choose an animal from a shelter and bring him home.
Socialize him, get him healthy, and promote him to find
him a forever home. As soon as he is adopted, go
back to the shelter and find another pet.
For those not in New
Orleans, pictures
appear on this website of animals who are available
for adoption from local shelters. Contact them,
and the network on the MuttShack Bulletin Board to find
people who will "pull" the animals for you from kill
shelters and to work out transport to your home town.
We will require a vet check... so let us know the name
of your local shelter.
Internet Networkers
Please promote the animals of Katrina. Their
pictures appear on the website. Promote them to
your friends, on your bulletin boards, to organizations
that may be able to take in a breed specific animal,
etc. Information is available from the blog,
website and on the bulletin boards. Animals need
one sponsor each... particularly the pit bulls and
bigger dogs. Once you have a match of pet and
owner, go to work on the bulletin board and have the
animals sent to you! We need veterinarian health
certificates for anyone leaving the state, so allow time
for paperwork, processing and flight arrangements.
Rebuilding Shelters
Many of the local shelters are gone completely.
The remaining ones are seriously damaged. If you are a
builder or contractor or handyman who can come and
volunteer for a week or more, please contact
volunteers@muttshack.org.
We need experienced builders, tree-fellers, contractors,
roofers, fencing, mould experts and a clean-up crews.

donate building materials and supplies, or Lowe's
Hardware cards, please contact
donations@muttshack.org.
Donations can be made by Credit Card or
Electronic Check.
Shelter Help
Additionally there are far
fewer local volunteers to help sustain the existing
shelters.
You will need to find a place to stay near a local
shelter, and come in to help take care of the animals.
Many hotels are open again, and local accommodations can
be found at nola.com.
We need shelter workers,
computer/admin workers, assisting with events, dealing
with public, whatever the need may be for the day.
Volunteers Urgently
Needed
Animal Rescue, Dog Trappers, Cat Trappers, Experienced Animal Control
Officers, DART certified, and Animal Behaviorists/Trainers are urgently
needed to help bring in the "runners". You will be required to be
credentialized through a local shelter.
